
International Institute Australia offers full and part time courses to meet students' different English language needs.
All courses feature:
- Instruction by fully qualified and experienced English language teachers, using up-to-date teaching methods and materials
- Regular academic counselling and feedback on progress from teachers
- Day 1 orientation
- extra hours of optional, free, self-access study time per week with individual assistance from English teachers
- Free computer and broadband Internet access
- Free access to learning materials (newspapers, magazines, books, tapes, CDs) in IIA’s Resource Centre
- Free access to kitchen facilities, and to TV & DVD in IIA’s rooftop student recreation area
- An activities program including half-day / full-day and weekend activities for students at discount rates.
International Institute Australia Language Levels
All General English students are given IIA’s class placement test on to make sure they are placed in the right class. The placement test consists of a written, listening and a spoken test.
Full-Time Courses
International Institute Australia currently offers the following full-time courses:
- General English: 5 levels from Elementary to Advanced
- Cambridge Examination Preparation
- IELTS exam preparation
Full-time students in the General English program choose from a range of "Afternoon Options" which focus on specific language skills .The "Afternoon Options" currently available are:
- News & Views
- Business English
- IELTS Preparation
- Public Speaking
- Writing and Grammar
These options are currently only available to students at Intermediate and higher levels.
All of International Institute Australia's full time courses have been accredited by the National ELT Accreditation Scheme Ltd (NEAS). NEAS ensures that English language colleges comply with the strict quality standards required by the Australian Government.
Part-Time Courses
Part-time students can study General English in the morning: Monday to Friday 9.00am to 12.30pm (15 classroom hours per week). Part-time enrolment is not available for holders of a student visa.
Short Courses
IIA can tailor a variety of short courses for groups with particular short-term requirements. For more information, contact IIA directly or ask one of our authorised education agents for details.
Entry Requirements
- IIA requires students to have sufficient education to cope with the demands of a course in English as a Second Language (this is usually a minimum of four (4) years secondary schooling).
- Students must be at least 18 years of age when they start their studies at IIA. Exceptions are made only with the written approval of the student's parents/guardian and the Director of Studies.
- English language level
- General English Students of any English language level may apply.
- General English students are given a placement test.
English Examination Preparation courses
Cambridge: IIA offers exam preparation for 3 Cambridge certificates.
- First Certificate in English (FCE): IIA’s course is suitable for strong Intermediate and Upper Intermediate students (as assessed by the College).
- Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): IIA’s course is suitable for strong Upper Intermediate and Advanced level students (as assessed by the College).
- Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): IIA’s course is suitable for strong Advanced and Advanced Plus level students (as assessed by the College).

All examination preparation courses at IIA aim for a maximum of 14 students per class. There is a 90% attendance requirement, which is the minimum requirement for successful completion.
General English

Cambridge Examination Preparation
The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) offers a range of general, academic and vocational English examinations. The "Cambridge Examinations" are recognised worldwide in the employment sector and by educational institutions as proof of English language proficiency.
IIA currently offers 3 full-time intensive Cambridge Examination Preparation Courses:
- FCE - First Certificate in English - suitable for strong Intermediate and Upper Intermediate level students,
- CAE - Certificate in Advanced English suitable for strong Upper Intermediate and Advanced level students,
- CPE - Certificate of Proficiency in English suitable for strong Advanced and Advanced Plus level students.
IIA provides comprehensive FCE, CAE and CPE exam preparation covering a broad range of topics and detailed study in reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking.
Our Cambridge courses feature:
- tuition by experienced Cambridge teachers
- closed classes to minimize disruption and maximize focus
- a balance of fun learning activities and challenging tasks
- the study skills and test strategies needed to perform well in the Cambridge examination
- 3 full mock exams that simulate the real examination

- a range of FCE / CAE / CPE study materials and practice tests which can be used for extra study in the Resource Centre or at home
IELTS Direct - IELTS Preparation (Intermediate - Advanced)
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) tests the English language skills of non-native speakers of English in reading, writing, listening and speaking. There is no required minimum English language level to take the IELTS test, but because of the content and language demands of the examination, it is recommended for people who have studied English for a number of years. You will need to be at least Intermediate level to enrol in an IELTS Direct course at IIA.
IIA’s 6-week full-time intensive IELTS Direct courses have been specifically designed to help you develop the language and test skills you need to perform well in the IELTS test. At IIA you will focus on the development of IELTS test strategies and skills for each module of the IELTS using IELTS practice test questions.
IIA’s IELTS Direct courses focus on Academic IELTS.
IIA offers IELTS Direct courses at Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced levels. Our IELTS courses feature:
- tuition by experienced IELTS teachers
- closed classes to minimise disruption and maximise focus
- an Academic IELTS focus
- practice with IELTS test questions under test conditions
- full mock tests that simulate the real IELTS test
- the study skills and test strategies needed to perform well in the IELTS
- a focus on the major content areas covered in each section of the IELTS (including global problems, business and industry, children and family, science and technology, crime and the law, media, education, politics, money and finance and the environment)
- a range of IELTS study materials and practice tests which can be used for extra study in the Resource Centre or at home.
Direct Entry: English pathways to further study
IIA’s IELTS courses have been approved for direct entry to programs at a number of local institutions that provide further education. Direct entry means that successful completion of an IIA IELTS Direct course will be accepted as evidence of having met the English language proficiency requirement for a number of programs. A student would still need to meet all other academic criteria for admission.
