Course Offerings
International Institute Australia offers a range of full-time, part-time and short courses to satisfy students' varying English language needs.
All courses feature:
  • Instruction by qualified, experienced English teachers using up-to-date teaching methods and materials
  • Regular academic counselling and feedback on progress from teachers
  • Day 1 college orientation
  • 12 hours of optional self-access study time per week with individual assistance from English teachers
  • Free computer and Internet access
  • Free access to learning materials (newspapers, magazines, books, tapes, CDs) in International Institute Australia's Resource Centre
  • Free access to kitchen facilities, and to a TV and video in International Institute Australia's rooftop recreation area
  • Special Interest Groups (SIGS) after class to encourage the development of skills such as leadership and organising events, in addition to English language skills
  • An activities program including half-day / full-day and weekend activities for students at discount rates

International Institute Australia Language Levels
All students are given International Institute Australia's Class Placement Test at orientation on their first day at the college to make sure they are placed in the right class. The placement test consists of a written and a spoken test.

Full-time students are also able to choose from a range of "Afternoon Options" in order to focus on specific language skills and their individual areas of interest.

NB: These options are currently available to students of Intermediate level and higher only.

All of International Institute Australia's full time courses have been approved by the National ELT Accreditation Scheme Ltd (NEAS).

Part-Time Courses
Students are able to study part-time at International Institute Australia, either in the morning (17.5 classroom hours per week) or in the afternoon (8 classroom hours per week).
International Institute Australia currently offers the following part-time courses:
Morning Only (9:00 a.m - 1:00 p.m.)

Afternoon Only (2:00 p.m - 4:00 p.m.)

Short Courses
International Institute Australia provides a range of short courses for groups with particular short-term learning requirements, for example study tours and night examination preparation classes. More information about short courses can be obtained directly from International Institute Australia or its authorised education agents.

Each class follows a coursebook specifically chosen with students' needs in mind. Students will also receive supplementary materials and original materials developed by the teachers at International Institute Australia.

Entry Requirements
International Institute Australia requires students to produce evidence of sufficient education (a minimum of four (4) years secondary schooling) to cope with a course in English as a Second Language. International Institute Australia will accept such evidence as an indication of literacy in the student's native language. Students must be at least 18 years of age upon commencement of their studies at International Institute Australia. Exceptions are made with the written approval of the student's parents/guardian and the Director of Studies.

General English Courses
Students of any English language level may apply.

International Institute Australia requires a minimum Intermediate level of English as assessed by the College.

General English
International Institute Australia's General English courses are structured to provide you with the confidence and skills that will help you to communicate fluently and accurately in a wide range of everyday situations. Our teachers are committed to helping you reach your personal, professional and academic goals.
Our General English courses feature:
  • a task-based approach to teaching that promotes natural language learning
  • a combination of enjoyable and challenging activities
  • many opportunities to practise English in a meaningful way with real-life outcomes
  • systematic work on all skills - speaking, listening, reading and writing
  • a focus on both accuracy and fluency

Cambridge Examination Preparation
The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) offers a range of EFL general, academic and vocational English examinations. The “Cambridge Exams” are recognised worldwide in the employment sector and by educational institutions in Britain and overseas as proof of language ability.

IIA currently offers 3 full-time intensive Cambridge Examination Preparation Courses:
  • FCE – First Certificate in English
  • CAE – Certificate in Advanced English
  • CPE – Certificate of Proficiency in English
IIA provides comprehensive FCE, CAE and CPE exam preparation covering a broad range of topics and detailed study in reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking.

Our Cambridge courses feature:
  • a balance of fun learning activities and challenging tasks
  • daily test strategies and practice test classes
  • 3 full mock exams that simulate the real exams
  • regular mock speaking exams with a Cambridge oral examiner, including comprehensive feedback
  • a range of FCE / CAE / CPE study materials and practice tests which can be used for extra study in the Resource Centre or at home

TOEIC® Preparation Courses
The TOEIC® (Test of English for International Communication) is an internationally recognised assessment of the English language skills of non-native speakers of English, in daily activities in the field of business.
International Institute Australia is an official TOEIC® test centre, authorised to test students internally. Students receive their TOEIC results and official certificates from the U.S.A. shortly after taking the TOEIC® at International Institute Australia.

Our 6-week full-time intensive TOEIC® Preparation Course has been specifically designed to help you develop the language and test skills you need to score well on the TOEIC®. At International Institute Australia, you will focus on the development of TOEIC® test strategies and skills for each part of the test and TOEIC®-like practice questions.

Our Intensive TOEIC® Preparation Course features:

  • daily test preparation with TOEIC®-like practice questions under test conditions
  • mock tests that simulate the real test
  • a range of TOEIC® study materials and practice tests which can be used for extra study in the resource centre or at home
  • the study skills and test strategies needed to answer the questions in all parts of the TOEIC®
  • a focus on the major content areas covered in each section of the TOEIC® (including General Business, Office Issues, Technical Issues, Personnel Finance, and Management Issues, Corporate Development, Restaurants and Events, Dining Out, Housing, Corporate Property, Travel, Entertainment and Health).

*This course is suitable for English Language students of intermediate level and above, as assessed by the college.

Part-Time TOEIC® Preparation Course
International Institute Australia offers part-time TOEIC® preparation as an Afternoon Option to students from Intermediate level and upwards.

IELTS Direct - IELTS Preparation (Intermediate – Advanced)
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) tests the English language skills of non-native speakers of English in reading, writing, listening and speaking. IELTS is fast becoming the most popular method of entering a university in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. An IELTS score of 6.5 is commonly required to enter university.

IELTS Direct has been specifically designed to help you develop the language and test skills you need to perform well in the IELTS test. At IIA you will focus on the development of IELTS test strategies and skills for each module of the IELTS using IELTS test questions. IELTS Direct focuses on Academic IELTS.

IIA offers IELTS Direct at Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced level.

Our IELTS Direct courses feature:

  • tuition by experienced IELTS teachers and IELTS examiners
  • closed classes to minimise disruption and maximise focus
  • an Academic IELTS focus
  • practice with IELTS test questions under test conditions
  • full mock tests that simulate the real IELTS test
  • the study skills and test strategies needed to perform well in the IELTS
  • a focus on the major content areas covered in each section of the IELTS (including global problems, business and industry, children and family, science and technology, crime and the law, media, education, politics, money and finance and the environment)
  • a range of IELTS study materials and practice tests which can be used for extra study in the Resource Centre or at home

English for Academic and New Technology Studies (EANTS)
EANTS has been designed to provide you with the English language skills you need to succeed in a specialised multimedia environment. EANTS introduces you to a combination of English for Academic Studies and specific English language and jargon associated with new technology-based study. This is a great intro to further study in the new technology field.

High School Preparation
Designed for 14-16 year olds, IIA’s High School Preparation course prepares you for what to expect in your life as a high school student in Australia. This course focuses not only on the academic aspects of high school life, but also on the cultural side, so that you feel prepared both academically and culturally for high school in Australia.

Real school experience
During the second module of the course, you will spend time each week at a Brisbane high school, meeting students at the school and experiencing class for yourself.

Student progress report
The progress of all High School Preparation course students will be closely monitored; with parents receiving an academic and welfare report every 6 weeks, indicating academic performance and general progress.

Active English
Active English, IIA’s newest program, offers you the chance of 4 weeks intensive English language study + Australian “action” activities + life with an Australian family. In total, you receive 102 hours of classroom study and 46 hours of activities. “Action” activities may include a trip to the famous beaches of the Gold Coast or Byron Bay or cycling along the Brisbane River or indoor rock climbing. This is a great way to develop your English both in and out of the classroom.
